Here is another movie that we have all seen.
The NeverEnding Story
Similar to my last post here, the question I pose is what sort of fantasy adventure inspiration can be drawn from this film. At least some of the characters and ideas from this story (within a story) can be found in well-known role-playing classes and professions.
Atreyu (male human/mid-level warrior/NG)
The boy hero (that my daughter mistook for a girl hero) that immediately accepts a quest from the Empress to save the world from a mysterious Nothing. He is a simple warrior and hunter, from the plains people.
The most fascinating part of the adventure in this story for me initially is the Swamp of Sadness. This fantastical setting is a bleak and dreary swampland that stretches for miles. If the sadness overtakes you and you are filled with despair, the swamp will swallow you as you sink into the mud. The deeper you sink, the more low you will feel apathy towards your own predicament.
This is an interesting and scary test that could be role-played well. I thought of using the idea a while back in a fiction piece set in the Dark Sun campaign setting. Of course the idea would be transformed into the Desert of Sadness. This is all still in my head, otherwise I'd be posting it's rough drafts here. The outline has an adult anti-hero, a grizzled mul (half dwarf) or hairless human warrior not unlike Vin Diesel replete with tattoos and sharp exotic weapons, pursuing a villainous wizard across the Sandy Wastes. On the shore of a shallow-looking Silt Sea lies an abandoned village where our hero is confronted by a crazy-looking old man who tries desperately to warn him off of entering the Desert of Sadness.
"The sadness will overtake you and you will sink below the surface, never to be seen again!"
But our hero cannot be swayed and he travels in undaunted. He struggles a bit at first, only to be taunted by the evil wizard he is chasing. Then the sadness begins to take him in earnest and the real trials begin.
